Suggestions for play:
The wooden box contains 100 balls – 10 each of the 10 brightest colours of the rainbow. The box is sealed on the top with a sheet of acrylic glass so that the balls cannot be removed or become lost. It is therefore played with from BELOW. The fingers of BOTH hands can be used to make the balls jump from one hole to another. BOTH SIDES OF THE BRAIN are challenged.
Children who struggle with mathematics can make a breakthrough through play, using the rows of coloured balls to count and do sums, from 1 to 100. Sets are understood and differentiated. Colours are named and learned. Shades of colour are differentiated e.g. light green, dark green. Still more fun through play can be had by designing imaginative patterns or playing games such as Connect Four. The balls can be ‘parked’ in the groove running around the edge, or sorted. Or they can be rolled around the edge of the box like a coloured snake.
When the abacus is placed on the legs supplied, two or more children can play together.
